Academic Advising Network March 16, 2010

Dustin Ritchey presented an excellent update to financial aid for academic advisors. Dustin's presentation provided us with reminders and current information about what advisors need to know about financial aid. As we seek to work collaboratively with our colleagues in financial aid to help students succeed to graduate, this is always helpful content. DebraAnn Brown and April Tyson attended with Dustin.

Dr. Judson Finley, new faculty member in Earth Sciences, and Brandy Dacus, graduate student from the department of Earth Sciences addressed the group concerning a new emphasis in archaeology. Courses in Earth Sciences (some cross listed with Anthropology) are being offered to allow students to acquire skills in field methods and a basic understanding of the subdiscipline. Finley and Dacus also mentioned the possibility that the Earth Sciences degree will soon be exclusivley a BA. This change is being considered by the department. We should hear more about that as we begin the Fall 2010 semester. More information is available in their presentation.

Finally, Patsy Krech gave us a little more information about the math placement tool called ALEKS (Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces). A small group is organizing for a summer start of use of this module for math placement. Dr. Ray Clapsadle is our math department contact for this project. I will ask Dr. Clapsadle to bring us up to date at our next two meetings (April and May) in the hopes that as Orientation begins we will be well prepared to interpret ALEKS intent, processes, and purposes to students.
